Tenun Reimagined
'Tenun Reimagined' is a collaboration between Cheminah Sayang, the crown jewel of Royal Pahang Silks, Pink Jambu and Shan Shan Lim Studios, launched in The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, in support of Viva Palestina Malaysia.
Weaving or tenun is a time-consuming process that requires close attention to detail. For this project, our aim was to innovate tenun by implementing new techniques onto the existing traditional 2-shaft floor looms.
Working closely with HM Queen Azizah of Malaysia, founder of Cheminah Sayang and Tengku Marina Ibrahim, founder of Pink Jambu, my role was to translate sketches and primary research into a language that our master weavers would understand. I had to ensure that their combined visions was brought to life faithfully by the artisans.
Despite the monsoon floods, the weavers were still able to deliver the work on time. Together, we created twelve exquisite shawls, each striking a unique balance between tradition and innovation.
In conjunction with Fashion Revolution Week, we took the opportunity to highlight the incredible artisans, the hands that wove every piece of fabric.
